✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG

This rug was woven by a woman.

Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.

We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.

First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.

What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.

You will never find another exactly like it.

✦ ABOUT THIS RUG

What sets this piece apart is something most vintage rugs can't offer: certainty about its age. This Isparta carpet was hand-knotted in 1979, making it a genuine 47-year-old textile rather than an estimate. Isparta, in southwestern Turkey, has been one of the country's most important carpet-weaving centers for well over a century, prized for refined floral compositions and rich dye traditions — and this piece is a textbook example of that craft at its peak.

The design is a classic Anatolian medallion composition: an ivory and cream field carries a bold, perfectly centered medallion rendered in soft blue, warm brown, and beige, flanked by smaller floral and palmette motifs in each corner. What makes this rug exceptional is how clearly the pattern has survived — the medallion is crisp, the arabesque scrollwork legible, the colors still distinct after nearly five decades of life. Framing the field is a wide, multi-band border: a rosette guard band, a scrolling vine pattern, and an outer geometric meander, all worked in matching taupe and brown tones.

This is a substantial, room-anchoring rug — large enough to define a living room or dining space, with the kind of well-preserved detail that's increasingly rare to find in pieces of this age. Condition is very good — pile is even, colors are stable, and the rug has been professionally cleaned and is fully ready to use.

✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN

The central medallion is the oldest and most significant compositional device in Anatolian carpet weaving. In its classical form — exactly as seen here — it represents the garden of paradise: a walled, protected space at the center of the rug, surrounded by the abundance of floral motifs that radiate outward from it. To place a medallion at the heart of a carpet was to place the idea of paradise at the center of the home.

The palmette motifs that fill the corners and borders carry their own long history in Ottoman and Anatolian decorative art. Derived originally from ancient depictions of the date palm — a symbol of fertility and continuity stretching back to pre-Islamic civilizations of the region — the palmette became, over centuries, a marker of abundance and life that would not end with a single season.

A weaver who completed a rug like this in 1979 was working within a tradition already centuries old, using motifs whose meanings she would have inherited rather than invented. That continuity — the same garden, the same abundance, passed from hand to hand across generations — is part of what you bring into your home with a piece like this one. It is not simply old. It is a link in a chain that has not yet been broken.

★★★★★

“Parfait. Patrick Demestre.”
