✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This vintage Turkish rug comes from Uşak (Oushak), a historic weaving region in western Anatolia known for generations of hand-knotted wool production. Its design is a bold stepped medallion — a hooked central diamond flanked by pointed pendants and cornered by floral spandrels, a layout rooted in classic Oushak medallion rugs. The colors have faded into a soft, weathered palette: navy blue in the medallion and border, set against a warm ivory-cream field, with muted taupe and dusty rose in the surrounding florals — a combination that reads as easily at home in a mid-century or scandinavian room as in a moodier gothic room. Decades of gentle use have thinned the wool pile to a naturally low, sun-softened texture, with light, even wear and color fading consistent with its age. As with every SFA Trading area rug, it has been cleaned, restored, and edge-secured, so it arrives structurally sound and ready to use.

✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
In Anatolian weaving tradition, the medallion is one of the oldest and most enduring motifs — often read as a symbol of the sun, of wholeness, or of the home itself, radiating outward from a single center point. Placed at the heart of the rug and outlined in the same soft blue that runs through its border, it was frequently chosen by the weaver to represent protection and balance for the household she wove for, a quiet wish for stability stitched into wool rather than spoken aloud. For the woman who tied these knots, the medallion may have marked a milestone — a wedding, a new home, a hope for her family's future — worked in colors drawn from the natural dyes around her village. When this rug enters your home, it carries that same intention forward: a centered, grounding presence in a room, and a tangible link to a craft and a person from another time and place. It is a small piece of continuity — history, care, and meaning, made wearable underfoot.
🧼 CARE & CLEANING
Vacuum gently and regularly, avoiding the beater bar/rotating brush on the pile. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — do not rub. For deeper cleaning, we recommend professional wool rug cleaning rather than home washing or steam cleaners, since vintage natural dyes can be sensitive to heat and moisture. Rotate the rug occasionally for even wear and fading, and keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight. A rug pad is recommended to prevent slipping and extend the life of the piece.

Patrick Demestre.”
