This rug was woven by a woman.

Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.

We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.

First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.

What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.

ABOUT THIS RUG

This large area rug was hand-knotted in 1985 in the Isparta region of southwestern Turkey, one of the country's most celebrated rug-weaving centers, known for over a century for its refined medallion compositions and rich dyeing traditions.

The field is a bold, saturated crimson, anchored by a single large oval medallion at its center, rendered in deep navy, sage green, and ivory, with intricate floral and vine details radiating outward to fill the entire field. The decorative borders carry dense floral motifs in matching navy and sage tones, a hallmark of fine Anatolian border work.

The colors show the natural, even fading typical of over four decades of genuine age and use — this is authentic wear, not artificial distressing. The wool pile is low, softened over the years into a smooth, broken-in texture.

✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN

The large oval medallion at the heart of this rug is one of the most enduring motifs in Anatolian weaving, traditionally understood as a symbol of the universe or a protective center — a single anchoring point around which the rest of the composition gathers. Centering a large area rug on one expansive medallion, rather than repeating smaller motifs, was a way of giving an entire room a single, unmistakable heart.

The floral vines and rosettes that surround the medallion carry their own symbolism in Anatolian textile tradition, often associated with abundance, fertility, and the cyclical renewal of the seasons. A weaver filling the space around her central medallion with this dense botanical detail may have been thinking of her home's prosperity continuing to unfold in every direction.
