✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG

This rug was woven by a woman.

Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.

We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.

First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.

What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.

You will never find another exactly like it.

✦ ABOUT THIS RUG

This runner was hand-knotted in the Kars region of eastern Anatolia in the Kazak tradition — a bold, tribal weaving style with roots in the Caucasus, prized by collectors for its strong geometry and fearless use of color. It dates to the mid-20th century, making it approximately 50 years old.

Three tribal medallions run the length of the runner, drawn in the angular, geometric language of the Kazak weavers. The field is a deep burgundy red, grounded and warm, set against slate blue, gold, and cream in the medallions and borders. Years of use have worn the pile low and softened the colors, giving the rug an authentic, storied vintage character. Bold yet balanced, it carries the unmistakable presence of a true tribal weaving.

✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN

Kazak medallions are among the most powerful motifs in the tribal weaving tradition — geometric, protective, and ancient. Each stepped medallion is a shield and a blessing, a symbol of strength woven to guard the home and those within it. Unlike the flowing florals of western Anatolia, the Kazak language is bold and architectural, speaking of mountains, tribes, and the open highlands where these designs were born.

Rendered in burgundy, blue, and gold, these are the colors of the Caucasus — deep earth, mountain sky, and the gold of late light on stone. A weaver who worked in this tradition was weaving strength and protection into every knot, a quiet guardian meant to walk with a family through the years.

★★★★★

“Parfait. Patrick Demestre.”
