✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This vintage Turkish runner comes from Kayseri, a Turkish city long known for fine, closely woven floral medallion rugs inspired by the classic Kerman style. The design centers on an elongated oval cartouche medallion with a rosette heart, flanked by pendant florals and framed by scrolling vine-and-blossom spandrels, all set within a wide floral border. Age and sun have softened the palette into a quiet, weathered range: slate-blue outlines and a warm taupe-brown border rest against a bleached ivory-cream field, a combination that suits a scandinavian-neutral hallway as easily as a southwestern or mid-century kitchen. Decades of foot traffic have worn the wool pile low and smooth, with light, even fading and thinning consistent with its age. As with every SFA Trading rug, it has been cleaned, restored, and edge-secured, so it arrives structurally sound and ready to use.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
In Anatolian and wider Turkish weaving tradition, the medallion at the center of a rug is rarely just decoration — it is often read as a symbol of the sun, of wholeness, or of the hearth itself, radiating outward from a single heart. Here, the oval cartouche and its central rosette echo a garden in bloom, a motif long associated with paradise, abundance, and the wish for a flourishing home. A weaver placing this pattern at the center of a narrow hallway runner may have been marking a threshold — the passage between the outside world and the safety of home — with beauty and protection woven into every knot. For the family who walked over it for decades, the rug became part of the daily rhythm of the house; for you, it becomes a quiet, storied path underfoot, carrying that same sense of welcome and continuity into your own home.

🧼 CARE & CLEANING
Vacuum gently and regularly, avoiding the beater bar/rotating brush on the pile — this matters especially in high-traffic hallway or kitchen placement. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — do not rub. For deeper cleaning, we recommend professional wool rug cleaning rather than home washing or steam cleaners, since vintage natural dyes can be sensitive to heat and moisture. Rotate the runner occasionally end-to-end for even wear, and keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight. A non-slip pad is recommended for hallway and stair use, both for safety and to extend the life of the piece.

Verified Etsy buyerVerified Etsy purchase ↗“Parfait. Patrick Demestre.”
