✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG

This rug was woven by a woman. Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use. What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home. You will never find another exactly like it.

ABOUT THIS RUG

This runner was hand-knotted in 1980 in the Isparta region of southwestern Turkey, one of the country's most celebrated rug-weaving centers, known for over a century for its refined symbolic motifs and rich dyeing traditions. The field is a soft, warm beige, centered on a tall, symbolic tree-of-life motif rising from the base toward the top of the rug, flanked by delicate floral sprigs and small rosettes in navy, brown, and rust. At both ends, ornate decorative borders carry classic Anatolian floral patterns in matching tones. The side edges of this piece were trimmed from a larger rug and neatly finished, while the original decorative end borders remain intact. The colors show the natural, even fading typical of over four decades of genuine age and use — this is authentic wear, not artificial distressing. The wool pile is low, softened over the years into a smooth, broken-in texture.

✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN

The tree-of-life motif rising at the center of this runner is one of the most enduring symbols in Anatolian weaving, traditionally understood as a bridge between earth and sky — its base rooted firmly in the home, its form reaching steadily upward. Placing this single, ascending shape at the heart of a long runner was a quiet way of giving the entire piece a sense of direction and purpose, a path the eye follows from one end to the other. The small floral sprigs and rosettes scattered around the central form carry their own symbolism in Anatolian textile tradition, often associated with renewal, protection, and the quiet abundance of everyday life. A weaver placing these details around her tree of life may have been thinking of her own home growing steadily, season after season, much like the branches she wove.Knotted over forty years ago by hands now passed into memory, this runner still carries that original sense of upward, rooted growth — ready to bring the same quiet sense of direction and continuity into your own hallway or home.

★★★★★

“Parfait. Patrick Demestre.”
