✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
ABOUT THIS RUG
This runner was hand-knotted in 1983 in the Isparta region of southwestern Turkey, one of the country's most celebrated rug-weaving centers, known for over a century for its refined medallion compositions and rich dyeing traditions.
The rug unfolds in a classic three-part composition: a softly patterned ivory-sage field fills the body, while a richly layered medallion in dusty mauve, olive green, and cream anchors the center. At both ends, sweeping palmette and acanthus-leaf borders curl outward in deeper mauve and olive tones, a hallmark of fine Anatolian border work.
The colors show the natural, even fading typical of over four decades of genuine age and use — this is authentic wear, not artificial distressing. The wool pile is low, softened over the years into a smooth, broken-in texture.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
The medallion at the heart of this runner is one of the most enduring motifs in Anatolian weaving, traditionally read as a symbol of the universe or a protective center — the still point around which the rest of the composition turns. Placing it at the heart of a long runner was a quiet way of anchoring the entire length of the piece, giving even a narrow hallway rug a sense of balance and completeness.
The palmette and acanthus scrolls that frame each end carry their own symbolism in Ottoman and Anatolian art, historically associated with growth, vitality, and the unfolding of life — motifs borrowed from garden and palace traditions and reimagined by village weavers in wool and knot. A weaver repeating this border across the full length of the rug may have been thinking of abundance extending through her home, end to end.
Woven over forty years ago by hands now passed into memory, this runner still carries that original intention — a sense of continuity and protection — ready to extend the same quiet abundance through your own hallway or home.

Verified Etsy buyerVerified Etsy purchase ↗“Parfait. Patrick Demestre.”
