✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG

This rug was woven by a woman. Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use. What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home. You will never find another exactly like it.

ABOUT THIS RUG

This runner was hand-knotted in 1979 in the Isparta region of southwestern Turkey, one of the country's most celebrated rug-weaving centers, known for over a century for its dense floral compositions and rich dyeing traditions. The field is a soft ivory ground, densely filled with a tree-of-life style floral lattice — climbing vines, small rosettes, and scattered blossoms rendered in dusty blue, mauve, navy, and soft pink. At both ends, bold decorative borders in pink and blue carry geometric and floral motifs, a hallmark of fine Anatolian border work. The side edges of this piece were trimmed from a larger rug and neatly finished, while the original decorative end borders remain intact. The colors show the natural, even fading typical of over four decades of genuine age and use — this is authentic wear, not artificial distressing. The wool pile is low, softened over the years into a smooth, broken-in texture.

✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN

The tree-of-life motif that fills this runner is one of the most enduring symbols in Anatolian and Persian-influenced weaving, traditionally read as a bridge between earth and the divine — a single living form whose branches reach upward and whose roots stay grounded in the home. Filling a long, narrow runner with this climbing, ever-branching pattern was a way of extending that sense of continuous growth along the entire length of the piece. The rosettes and small blossoms scattered among the vines carry their own symbolism in Anatolian textile tradition, often associated with renewal, fertility, and the passing of the seasons. A weaver repeating this pattern down the full length of her runner may have been thinking of her household's life continuing to unfold, season after season, much like the branching vines themselves.Woven over forty years ago by hands now passed into memory, this runner still carries that original intention — a sense of living continuity — ready to extend the same quiet vitality through your own hallway or home.

★★★★★

“Parfait. Patrick Demestre.”
