These stockings are handcrafted from the offcuts of our vintage Anatolian rugs — pieces left over when rugs are cut and shaped. Instead of going to waste, each fragment is transformed into a one-of-a-kind Christmas stocking, carrying the same hand-woven wool and natural dye colors as the rug it came from.

This one was cut from a richly colored Anatolian rug with a large floral pattern. Full blossoms and curling leaves in emerald green, golden ochre, rose and cream spread across a warm madder red ground, all drawn in fine deep navy outlines. Unlike many of our stockings, the wool pile here is thick and plush rather than worn flat, so the piece feels soft and full in the hand. There is no separate velvet cuff — the woven rug runs the full height, finished at the top with a natural linen hanging loop.

✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE COLOR

The red in this stocking is not a small thing. For centuries, the red at the heart of Anatolian rugs came from madder root — kök boya — dug up, dried, ground and boiled again and again to draw out a deep, warm red that would not fade. It was the most prized and most labor-intensive color a weaver could put into her rug, and a red-ground carpet was a quiet statement of abundance: this household could afford the work, the wool, the time.

In Anatolian weaving red carried life itself — warmth, blood, protection, joy. A weaver reached for it when she wanted her rug to hold all of those at once.

There is something fitting in that red arriving on a Christmas stocking, long before red and green ever belonged to December. The color was already the color of warmth and life and welcome. Hung on a mantel now, the stocking carries a red that meant all of that on a loom decades ago — and a stocking gets hung one year, then the next, until it belongs to the family rather than to the season.
