❆ ABOUT THIS STOCKING

These stockings are handcrafted from the offcuts of our vintage Anatolian rugs — pieces left over when rugs are cut and shaped. Instead of going to waste, each fragment is transformed into a one-of-a-kind Christmas stocking, carrying the same hand-woven wool and natural dye colors as the rug it came from.

This one was cut from a softly faded Anatolian rug with a geometric pattern. Angular motifs — small hooked shapes, stepped diamonds and zigzag lines — spread across a sandy beige ground in faded terracotta, warm brown, muted teal green and cream. Decades of sun and use have washed everything down to a calm, neutral palette; nothing here is bright. The pile is low and soft, worn smooth by time. There is no separate velvet cuff — the woven rug runs the full height, finished at the top with a natural linen hanging loop.

Every piece is unique. No two stockings are alike.

✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN

The shapes on this stocking are not decoration for its own sake. The women who wove Anatolian village rugs mostly could not read or write, and the geometric motifs were their language — a way of setting down meaning in wool that everyone in the village could read. A hooked diamond guarded against the evil eye. A stepped line was running water, and water was life. A small paired figure stood for a mother, for family, for the wish to not be alone.

A rug like this was never only a floor covering. It was a woman writing — protection, hope, a blessing on the home — in the one language open to her.

Most of that language is quiet now, faded along with the colors, and no single motif on this fragment can be read as a full sentence. But the intent behind it survives: every mark was placed to wish a household well. Hung on a mantel at Christmas — itself a season of protecting and blessing the home — the stocking carries that old wish forward, one year to the next, until it belongs to the family rather than to the season.
