These stockings are handcrafted from the offcuts of our vintage Anatolian rugs — pieces left over when rugs are cut and shaped. Instead of going to waste, each fragment is transformed into a one-of-a-kind Christmas stocking, carrying the same hand-woven wool and natural dye colors as the rug it came from.

This one was cut from a softly faded Anatolian rug with a cream and sand ground. A curling vine winds down the length of the stocking, outlined in deep navy and filled with camel and honey tones, with small blossoms in muted rose and faded green appearing along the way. Decades of use have worn the pile down to a low, even surface, so the pattern reads as gentle and washed rather than sharp. A blush pink velvet cuff and a natural linen hanging loop finish the piece.

✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN

The winding vine on this stocking is known in Turkish as kivrik dal — the curling branch. It is one of the oldest motifs in Anatolian weaving, drawn as a single continuous line that never closes and never ends. To the women who wove it, the unbroken vine stood for the continuity of life: one generation growing out of the last, a family line carrying forward without a break. The small blossoms set along the branch mark abundance — the years that bore fruit.

A weaver did not choose this motif at random. Choosing the endless vine was a quiet wish for her household to continue, for her children and their children to keep the line going.

There is something fitting in that motif arriving on a Christmas stocking. A stocking is hung one year, then hung again the next, and the next, until it belongs to the family rather than to the season. The vine says the same thing the tradition does: this continues.
